Anniversaries and awareness events are great communication vehicles for educating your credit union members and the community at large. Here’s a look at upcoming summer awareness events and tips on how to incorporate the campaign.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Month
June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Month. This month works to not only educate people on the topic of elder abuse but also to increase reporting numbers as elder abuse is under-reported and start discussions on how to recognize and prevent this abuse.
The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations (UN) launched the first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 15, 2006, in an effort to unite communities around the world in raising awareness about elder abuse.
Use the awareness month to educate your members about common cybersecurity scams, provide tips to alleviate being scammed and how to be an advocate for the less vulnerable in our communities.
For more information about World Elder Abuse Awareness Month, please visit the University of Southern California’s Center for Elder Justice.
National Homeownership Month
In 1995, President Bill Clinton created the first National Homeownership Week. Then, in 2002, President George W. Bush extended the awareness week to a full month.
Use the awareness month to educate your credit union members about how to apply for a mortgage and benefits of using your credit union’s mortgage offerings. Also be an advocate in your community about the decline of housing affordability in Tennessee. Plus, you can create tips to celebrate homeownership with your existing mortgage members to help remind them that the credit union is available for any future home renovation needs.
For more information about National Homeownership Month, please visit the Days of the Year website. (Sadly, we couldn’t find any national materials for 2024.)
National Zoo and Aquarium Month
Did you know that June is also National Zoo and Aquarium Month? The event is celebrated annually to honor the role of zoos and aquariums in the conservation and research of animal and fish species.
Use the awareness event to remind members that they can receive a discount at the Georgia Aquarium.
For more information about the Georgia Aquarium discount for credit union members, please visit the Club Fish: Credit Unions of Tennessee website.
90th Anniversary Federal Credit Union Act, June 26
June 26 marks the 90th anniversary of the passage of the Federal Credit Union Act of 1934. Enacted during the depths of the Great Depression, the law enabled credit unions to be organized throughout the United States under charters approved by the federal government. The federal law aimed to make credit available to Americans and promote thrift through a national system of nonprofit, cooperative credit unions.
Use the anniversary to promote the longevity of the Federal Credit Union Act, your credit union’s history and the cooperative movement.
For more information about the anniversary of the Federal Credit Union Act, please visit the American Association of Credit Union Leagues website.
I Love My Credit Union Day, July 26
On Friday, July 26, credit unions across the nation will come together with the purpose of inspiring authentic and high-energy conversation about why we love our credit unions.
Use the awareness event to encourage your staff and members to highlight why they love the credit union.
