League President Remembers the Founder of Middle Tennessee Federal Credit Union

In 1969, Navy veteran and maintenance mechanic armed with $50 and a cigar box co-founded Fleetguard Federal Credit Union in Cookeville, Tenn. It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Bob Stinnett.

Fleetguard Federal Credit Union is known today as Middle Tennessee Federal Credit Union and has a community charter for Putnam County.

“We are so grateful for his vision in starting this credit union, formerly know as Fleetguard Federal Credit Union, back in the fall of 1969,” shared Middle Tennessee Federal Credit Union on social media.

Mr. Stinnett served as a board member for the Tennessee Credit Union League. Fred Robinson, president and CEO of the Tennessee League, shares his thoughts on Bob’s service to credit unions.

“Bob was the epitome of a true credit union believer—someone who wholeheartedly understood and exemplified the values of determination and hard work. He firmly believed that with the right mindset and effort, anything was possible.

I have fond memories of Bob’s time serving on the Tennessee Credit Union League Board. As a dedicated volunteer leader, he brought invaluable perspective, unwavering support and a sense of camaraderie that enriched our organization.

One of my favorite memories of Bob was watching him and my boss, Tom Gaines, engage in spirited banter over credit union issues in the boardroom. They could debate passionately but always walked away as friends, exemplifying the collaborative spirit that defines our movement.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob’s family during this time. His legacy and contributions to the credit union movement will not be forgotten.”

Here is Mr. Stinnett’s obituary.
