Mark your calendars for the national Slam the Scam Day on Thursday, March 6. The awareness day is part of the National Consumer Protection Week and is designated by the Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General to raise awareness of government imposter scams, which continue to rise.
“We invite you to use the Slam the Scam campaign to help educate your members about the need to remain vigilant in the fight against fraud,” said Fred Robinson, president and CEO of the Tennessee Credit Union League.
Here are tips to share with members on how to avoid a scam.
- Remain calm.
- Talk to someone you trust.
- Hang up or ignore the message.
- DO NOT click on links or attachments.
- Protect your money. Criminals will insist that you pay in a hard-to-trace manner, such as with a gift card, prepaid debit card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, money transfer, or by mailing cash.
- Protect your personal information. Be skeptical of a contact you didn’t initiate.
- Spread the word. Share your knowledge of Social Security-related scams.
